One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish – this hasn’t changed my life. However, many things that Dr. Seuss said over his life have. Dr. Seuss had a way of saying something that would resonate with children and adults alike.
Having no children of his own, he once said: “You have ‘em, I’ll entertain ‘em.” He did that over the course of an eight decade career of writing. Even today, I love reading Dr. Seuss books to my grandchildren. “Put Me In The Zoo” is my favorite, but there isn’t a bad one in the bunch.
Today, I would like to share with you seven out of the many Dr. Seuss quotes out there that changed my thinking – and helped me get a better perspective on this journey called life.
Dr. Seuss Quotes That Changed My Life
1.) “Fun is good.” – Dr. Seuss
Many of us don’t take the time out of our busy schedules to just have fun on a daily basis. Some never take the time at all. They just experience fun when they are on vacation or when they’re doing something entertaining.
But what if you could have fun driving in traffic? What if you could have fun at work? What if you could have fun at the dentist? The great news is you can.
You make your own fun. Fun is in the eye of the beholder. Fun is good! A few weeks ago, I went to a funeral and we laughed through the entire service. The man we were celebrating loved jokes. He was a funny man who truly had a great grasp of this concept.
I knew he was smiling down from heaven and laughing with us, pleased that we chose to celebrate his life instead of being sad. Nowadays, I try to find fun everywhere I go and in everything I do. Even laundry is fun for me now!
You know what – the task didn’t change, but my thinking did. Decide today that everything can be fun.
2.) “Only you can control your future.” – Dr. Seuss
I was never freer than when I got this concept. It meant I didn’t have to rely on the government, my spouse, my employer, my parents, or anyone else to make my future everything I wanted it to be. It was all up to me.
The day I took control of my future was the day my life changed forever. I went from being a single mom, making $10,000 a year with a $200,000 debt, to a loving wife, great mother, and successful business owner who is also debt-free.
As long as I was looking to other people to solve my problems, they were just going to stay there (or get worse). So I decided to take back control and my life has never been the same. You are the author of your story – take back your pen and write a best seller!
3.) “I meant what I said and I said what I meant.” – Dr. Seuss
One of the biggest keys to wealth is integrity – being honest with others and with yourself. Included in this is keeping your word. I learned a great lesson from the Bible: think before you speak and make sure that what is coming out of your mouth is true and edifying.
Otherwise, there is no reason to say it. Whether it is honoring your contracts like your debt, or simply following through on a commitment, keeping your word is vital to success.
4.) “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
A common denominator among a survey of wealthy people was that they read at least ONE non-fiction book a month (in most cases, more). Education doesn’t stop on graduation day.
The thing I love most about technology is that you can learn anything thanks to websites like YouTube. Literally anything – there are also thousands of free (and premium) online courses where you can learn right in the comfort of your own living room.
There are NO excuses for not learning something new every day. As one of Dr. Seuss quotes says: the more you learn, the further you will go.
5.) “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” – Dr. Seuss
Live your authentic life and no one else’s. This was huge for me. I had always lived for what others wanted and what other people would think. How do you think I got in so much debt?
I finally realized that I needed to be me, do what I love and live a life that would bring ME joy. It took me a while to figure out who the real me was. But once I did, there was no stopping me. Love your life – not anyone else’s!
6.) “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss
We can all use this right now. Every one of us is God’s child, even if you don’t believe in Him. He made each of us special in our own way. For that reason, we are to love each other.
Close your eyes and imagine a country and a world where everyone was kind to each other. It can happen – and it starts with you. One person changing can start the caring revolution we need to see today.
7.) “Today was good, today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” – Dr. Seuss
Go into each day with a positive attitude. You will get out of life exactly what you put in. So if you want positive things, you must act in a positive way. In every trial, there is a treasure. Sometimes, you have to look long and hard – but it is there, I promise.
I haven’t had a bad day in several years. I’ve had bad things happen, sure, but never a bad day. For example, my husband and I were in a terrible rollover accident six months ago. I was laughing and telling jokes in the ambulance as my nose was bleeding everywhere.
I was so happy to be alive that the small hole in my nose was nothing. Finding the treasure helped me get through the trial of dealing with insurance, getting a new car, and having surgery. It even helped me to not even consider suing the lady who caused the accident.
Take life one day at a time. Enjoy each day and make it as fun as you can. Laugh, find joy, and you will have a great life – no matter what your circumstances are.
Did these Dr. Seuss quotes strike a chord with you, too?
“From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.”
You are the author of your own story. What happens to you in this life is all up to you. It is NOT what happens to you, but how you react that will decide your destiny. So even when not-so-good things are happening, you can smile, you can laugh, and you can find the treasure in your trial.
You only get ONE life. No one knows how long it will be. Enjoy every day and don’t let this one get away. There are no do-overs in this journey we call life.
