21 quotes about perseverance to help you through tough times

10 quotes about perseverance to help you through tough times

21 quotes about perseverance to help you through tough times

1.) “Tell me and I Forget. Teach me and I Remember Involve me and I Learn!” – Benjamin Franklin

I think this is so true, you only really learn concepts, facts, figures, data, etc. in school when you dig into it and you never forget those experiences when the point is driven home by example.  Chemistry class only came alive during lab when you got to try it for yourself and mix things in the beaker.  Those are the ones you get right on the exam!

2.) We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.  Winston Churchill

And the more we give the more we get.  Look at Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, being 2 of the wealthiest people in the world who are also some of the most generous which now brings meaning to their lives.

3.) “Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people. Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself. To handle yourself, use your head; To handle others, use your heart. Many people will walk in and out of your life, But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.”   – Eleanor Roosevelt

When I worked in large companies early my career I always tried to remember this quote when the office gossip would join the table at lunch so that my mind and heart would be as big as possible and not to be scared to make mistakes as I progressed in my career.  It really is great advice for success in business.

4.) ‘Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.’   – Robert Kennedy

He said this in South Africa, President Obama quoted it in one of his early speeches. It shows that we all have a role to play in positive change in the world.

5.) And in the end it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.   – Abraham Lincoln

Considering his life was cut short this has even more meaning, even today more than one hundred years later we celebrate his courage and accomplishments from his short life.

6.) “Either write something worth reading about or do something worth writing about.”  – Ben Franklin

He was a man of action and this quote is a kick in the pants to go do something big with your life too.

7.) “There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”  – Nelson Mandela

So powerful coming from him visiting the prison were  he spent so many years.  People change, ideas change, the world changes.  It is an important realization that progress requires change and change can be hard but it is necessary for us to move forward.

8.) “Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.” – Napoleon

Persistence and determination are key ingredients to succeed.  Never give up.  Success is usually closer than you realize.

9.) “Well done is better than well said.” – Benjamin Franklin

Talk is cheap.  Execution is key.  You can always tweak and improve after you launch but you will never know if you do not get out there and do it.

10.) “Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” –Winston Churchill

Failure is just part of the process, you have to keep your focus on the vision and keep at it.  Learn from setbacks and keep making progress, that is how it happens.

11.) “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” –John D. Rockefeller

I think he was a politician/senator/congressman?  A great reminder to keep pushing yourself to excellence and not get too comfortable or complacent.

12.) “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” –Thomas Jefferson

My grandfather kept a version of this quote on a plaque on his desk throughout his career and I asked my dad for it when he passed away in his mid-80s.  It is a constant reminder to me that luck does not just happen, you make your luck by doing your homework so you can recognize trends and opportunities when they arise.  My grandfather worked very hard  until the day he died, he had a tremendous work ethic that really made an impression on me and everyone around him.  He was an entrepreneur before the word was even used and seeing his plaque on my desk is sometimes just the kick in the pants I need to be persistent and keep at it.  The only difference between success and failure is that the successful person just kept trying, one more push, another experiment or trial and finally they find a way that works.  Maybe luck is really just effort and persistence.

13.) “The starting point of all achievement is desire.” —Napoleon

You have to want it more than anyone else.  No one wins a gold medal with luck.  It takes a lot of hard work, passion, energy, determination to achieve greatness.

14.) “The No. 1 reason people fail in life is because they listen to their friends, family, and neighbors.” —Napoleon

When real customers are willing to pay real money for your product or service, you have a real business. Start with the fundamentals: Who are you and why should anyone care? If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, then why should anyone else be? There’s a lot of noise in every category, so if you don’t have a unique story to tell and a new approach or idea that excites you, then go no further.  Every great business is built on a great story so start telling yours to potential customers and see if they buy what you’re selling. Testing should always be done with real customers, not with family and friends (who may only tell you what they think you want to hear so they don’t hurt your feelings).

15.) “You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.” –Margaret Thatcher

Another reminder to be persistent and never give up.  Even for great leaders you have to keep at it.

16.) “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing.” –Abraham Lincoln

You must believe it can and will happen.  If  you are not behind it why should anyone follow you?  Like Kevin Costner in Field of  Dreams, if you build it they will come.  Every successful entrepreneur from Bill Gates to Richard Branson to Steve Jobs believed in their vision for success.

17.) “He who lives in harmony with himself lives in harmony with the universe.” –Marcus Aurelius

It starts with you from the inside out.  You cannot ultimately be effective or successful if you do not have your own house in order.

18.) “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” –Dalai Lama

Be kind to yourself and others always Happiness is a choice you make every day.

19.) “I am not bound to win, I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to the light I have.” –Abraham Lincoln

The real competition is with yourself not others.  Set the bar high and make it a priority.  Others cannot stop you, only you can stop you so work hard  for best results.

20.) “Think of what you have rather than of what you lack. Of the things you have, select the best and then reflect how eagerly you would have sought them if you did not have them.” –Marcus Aurelius

Count your blessings and always be grateful,  you have no idea what tradeoffs others had to make long the way.   No 2 paths are the same.

21.) “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs–even though checkered by failure–than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” –Theodore Roosevelt

It is not a coincidence that some of the best sluggers also struck out a lot too.  Swing for the fences and sometimes you will succeed, as Wayne Gretsky said you miss 100% of the shots you do not take so go for it!
