Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside and author of The How of Happiness, a book of strategies backed by scientific research that can be used to increase happiness. The majority of her research career has been devoted to studying human happiness. Why is the scientific study of happiness important? In short, because most people believe that happiness is meaningful, desirable, and an important, worthy goal, because happiness is one of the most salient and significant dimensions of human experience and emotional life, because happiness yields numerous rewards for the individual, and because it makes for a better, healthier, stronger society.

Shawn authored The Happiness Advantage and founded the Institute of Positive Research and GoodThinkInc, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers — people who are well above average — to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, Shawn has become one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between happiness and success. He is also the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class. His research on happiness made the cover of Harvard Business Review, his TED talk is one of the most popular of all time with over 13 million views, and his lecture airing on PBS has been seen by millions.

LORD RICHARD LAYARD
Emeritus Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics
Professor Lord Layard is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics. He now heads the Centre’s Programme on Well-Being. Richard is also a labour economist who worked for most of his life on how to reduce unemployment and inequality. He is also one of the first economists to work on happiness, and his main current interest is how better mental health could improve our social and economic life.
