What Makes It So Difficult To Get Motivated?
You might have noticed that every time you decide to start on something new, there is an invisible force working hard at pulling you away. That is the resistance and we face it whenever we set on a new venture, whatever it may be.
Overcoming that resistance is the hard thing and that is what motivation is needed for. You have decided to finally start dieting but there is a new eatery in town and you just got to try it. You have been given a deadline by the newspaper editor for that feature article but you just cannot get over the writer’s block.
You have taken over a creative project but you cannot even come up with a logo for the campaign due to lack of inspiration. It is all very common; you step into a new territory and you face resistance. You might get an early surge of motivation but it doesn’t last long and you need a new dose of motivation.
However, the important thing is to get over the resistance and motivate yourself. Unfortunately, that is not so easy, but necessary nonetheless. But why is there this resistance that puts you off your work?
The good part is that all this is just in your head. If you think positively, the outcome is favorable too. You first need to identify your issues in order to overcome them and get yourself motivated. What could these factors be?
The very first and most important factor behind resistance and lack of motivation is that you feel you are being forced to do that task; you do not want to yet you have to. Even if it concerns something that you are interested in or something that you enjoy, you will feel pressured and daunted if you are being made to it. No one wants any “have to do” tasks; they would rather they choose the tasks themselves.
A simple solution to this is to consider it something you want to do on your own. That is, you are doing it because you have chosen to. You do not have to cook dinner every day. You have the option of getting a takeout. Yet, you will choose to cook a nice, hot meal because of the benefits attached to it: you are getting healthy, nutritious food, for one. Secondly, it will cost you much less and will be in line with your taste and requirements. Once you believe that you are in charge and you start concentrating on what you are getting out of the task, you will be motivated towards it and the resistance will not affect you.
Your values is another matter of concern here. If you are faced with a task that goes against your beliefs and values, you will automatically not feel like doing it. You might make all kinds of excuses to evade or prolong it because you are just not okay with it. This could be anything. Maybe you consider work-life balance a big thing and are not in favor of working overtime and letting go of spending time with family. But work is important too and you are faced with a dilemma. What can you do in such a case? Maybe considering alternatives will help out. For instance, you could ask for time off next week to make up for the extra time you are giving now. Or you could look at it from another angle: the extra overtime would be a nice contribution to the savings you have been working on for a family vacation. Till you get over the conflict between your beliefs and your task, you will not be able to get in action.
Competence is the third factor behind resistance to completing a task. If you feel that you are not good at something, you will try to avoid it because you feel that you are not up to performing the task and you would fail at it. Again, the lack of competitiveness needs to be dealt with. How to do that? By realizing that you will need to put in some effort to attain excellence. You will need to practice to become perfect. We understand this all too well yet we do not really put it into effect. If you need help, there is a pretty good chance that your seniors would be available for you. Talk to them and clear out your doubts. If that option is not available, you could reach out to friends. There is always someone out there who could guide you. You just have to look. Once you clear out this obstacle you will be able to reach out to your task.
So, basically it is up to you to motivate yourself. It could be about a variety of things and not just your job. Maybe you are a shopaholic and need to get over this habit of yours and save money during college. Maybe you want to start a business venture but lack the courage for it because you are too afraid to fail and lose money. Maybe you are simply trying to get back to a decent life after having been an addict. It could be anything.
When you feel resistance stopping you from getting forward and those feelings of doubt getting in the way, you know it is time to take a plunge. You need to pin point the areas you are lacking in so that you can clear out your doubts and make a way out. It is all your willingness to make the push that matters. Keep moving ahead. Take one step at a time but do not stop. It might feel difficult at first but once you get into form it will no longer be a big deal. You will see the resistance fading and you will reach your destination.
