We know the numbers, we know the stats, we’ve heard the news, and we have been warned many times that we should take care of our health. In fact, it has become background noise, repeated until it slips our attention. Perhaps some will take it seriously and some will not. And yet, most of us are aware that diabetes is the disease that has taken over the world in the last couple of years, with especially high rates in the United States.

 

Millions of people are currently suffering from the life-altering condition, needing to change their lifestyle to accommodate it. It becomes their burden, their identity, and an issue that will affect them for the rest of their existence. Their loved ones will feel the consequences and, whether they know it or not, they will suffer as well. A saddening aspect is that many more stand to be diagnosed in the future should matters continue as they are now.

 

The true tragedy, however,is that there is no cure. There are temporary solutions that will only get you through it, one day at a time, but you will still be at a higher risk of unforgiving medical conditions and health problems. It’s a very non-discriminatory disease.

 

It can appear at a very young age or later on in life, equally across genders or ethnicities. It can spark up without too many symptoms or it can arrive with multiple warning signs. You can never know, so make sure you find yourself a specialized doctor and get the test done, for the sake of your life or your loved ones.

 

Diabetes sounds like a curse, as it’s riddled with hardships and incessant problems that could make its victims suffer. But every difficulty in life arrives with its own lessons, and each challenging step makes us stronger. We can learn tremendously from those who suffered and who are still going forward with their condition. They can teach us valuable lessons, as there is no better inspiration than the examples they provide themselves.

1. You’re Stronger Than You Think

Life is hard, it’s full of obstacles that we must conquer in order to move forward. Not all are ready to face them, but all must do so regardless of will or choice. Giving up is always the easiest option, but it’s never the best. As they struggle with their condition, a patient of diabetes can show us that we can get through anything. It will not be easy and it might hurt, but you are stronger than you think and you can get through it.

2. You Are Not Just One Thing

Never let one aspect of who you are define you nor let it influence the path you choose in life. Be it a disease or a flaw, it’s not who you are. Accept it, embrace it, wear it like an armor, and move on with it, stronger and better aware of your identity. Know that many people around the word struggle with the very concept. Answering the question “Who am I?” is as simple as it is difficult.

 

Some may never find the answer. The lesson to take, however, is that we will never be just one thing. We are a collection of traits, flaws, and life experiences. Don’t let anyone make you think otherwise and sum you up in one word.

3. Life Is Not a Contest on Who Suffers the Most

Take other people’s issues into account, whether they might seem small to you. Perhaps the fact that your friend’s car got scratched isn’t the end of the world and their panicked outburst is not warranted in your eyes. But it is to them.

 

Acknowledge other people’s fears and problems. Never utter the words “Stop complaining, because someone has it worse than you!”. Someone in the world will always have it worse than you, but that does not invalidate your hardships. Everyone has their own priorities, fears, and aspirations. Your worries matter and the same goes for everyone. Be compassionate, but don’t pity.

4. Take Care of Yourself

Always listen to what your body is telling you, so you should always heed its warnings. We have one life, one body, so we must do our best to ensure our journey to the end will be long and smooth.When something is wrong, make sure you think it through on what it can be, perhaps even visit a doctor. Exercise and eat healthy. You do not need a doctor to remind you of that, and you certainly don’t want that practice to be forced on you by any medical condition. There is such a thing as “too late” when it comes to medicine.

5. Don’t Limit Yourself in Life

Never think that you are stuck. No matter your age, life is still happening, and the world is still open for you. There is no one standing in your way but yourself. Don’t settle for “good enough”, and instead go ahead to get what you’ve always dreamed about. Live by the motto that you can do whatever you want, as long as it’s not hurting anybody. No matter who you are, what you do, or what life you’re living, there’s always the opportunity to improve yourself.

6. Treat Each Day Like a New Start

Did you lose your job or you’re going through a difficult break-up? Tomorrow is a new day, and it’s going to get better. There are fresh opportunities waiting for you, so don’t dwell on the past or mistakes. Do something different and never let yourself fall in a rut, which will only end with you wondering “where did all the time go?”. There’s no reason not to challenge yourself and no mountain high enough. Happiness is a choice.

7. Don’t Take On Life Alone

Appreciate your loved ones and let them help you. Don’t isolate yourself or become closed off because of your problems. Always remember that there are people willing to help, love, and support you, no matter what you’re going through.

 

Let people in and walk with them through life. Asking for help does not make you a failure or means that you’re incompetent. It just means that you’re not alone.

8. Everything Has Consequences

Think things through, and consider how your words or actions will affect both you and someone else. Being selfish with others and reckless with yourself is not a road you should travel, because you will step toward the end with too many regrets. You may not feel the consequences now, but you will one day, and it might very well be too late. Treat yourself better, treat others better, and you will definitely start reaping the benefits soon.

9. Never Judge Others

It’s an important lesson that many of us hear during our childhood. At some point, though, we lose sight of it and we indulge in skewed perceptions or rash judgement. We stick with our mentality and never open our minds to new or different things. Diabetics, for example, often get fingers pointed at their face with judgmental looks and claims that they brought this onto themselves.

 

But that’s not the sole possible cause of their condition, and yet it’s another hardship they have to face. Not only do they have to deal with the physical consequences, but the psychological ones sparked by public shaming and misconceptions.

 

They say that you should never judge a book by its cover, but you shouldn’t judge it by the first few pages either.

10. This Too Shall Pass

Bad days happen. You will hurt, you will feel sad, and you might have days when you will feel like just giving up. But it’s going to pass, because happiness is not a destination. It’s a state of mind, and it’s going to ebb and flow. You’re not always going to be happy, and when you are, you won’t stay happy forever.

 

You will get your heart broken and you will get disappointed, but you will also move past it, no matter how hard it seems in the moment. Don’t deny your pain and don’t push it away. Embrace it as a part of life, one that you will eventually overcome.
