What Your Business Should Be Doing in 2018

What Your Business Should Be Doing Right Now, in 2016

When it comes to trends across marketing, management, human resources, and infrastructure, it’s important to stay on top of new developments. However, between all of those areas, and the day to day aspects of running your business, it can be hard to keep up with everything that’s happening.

Luckily, to help you on your journey through the year, we’ve compiled a list of a few things your business should be doing in 2018:

What Your Business Should Be Doing Right Now, in 2018

Digital Video Content

As all marketers in the digital age know, content is king. But in many ways, 2015 was the year of video content. 78% of people watch videos online every week, and that includes on mobile.

It’s pretty clear that to keep up with the surge in digital video, you have to put content out there. Services and social media sites like Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope, and Meerkat are all examples of both real-time and static video content providers.

One of the best aspects of video content is that it’s eminently reusable within your marketing strategy, and though video advertising and professionally produced videos can cost a pretty penny, social media video is often very cost effective.

Podcasts

If you’re asking yourself “when did Podcasts become relevant again?” The answer is now.

Podcasting has been around for more than a decade, but the advent of smartphones has made the portable medium easier than ever to access. Creating your own Podcast as a marketing strategy allows you to engage your audience on the go.  Because they’re free and easily accessible on any device, most of the investment comes in the form of your time.

If you don’t have the time to create your own Podcast content, find a trade Podcast or other thought leader who is willing to have you on their show. That’s a great way to introduce yourself and your company to a new audience.

Ecommerce

If you have a retail store, now is the time to open your business up to an ecommerce strategy. Launch an online store via your website, or an online hub like Etsy.

If you’ve got the in-person customers, why not offer your goods online as well? The key to a successful ecommerce business is often in marketing, so make sure you’re aligning your online store with your social media accounts and in-store promotions.

Also be sure to write some compelling copy in your product descriptions, and make the store section of your website look nice.

Cybersecurity

Now that the majority of businesses are internet-based, and all businesses have at least some online component, the issue of cybersecurity is more prevalent than ever.

Threats to online security cost the world’s economy more than $300 Billion every year. These threats affect businesses large and small alike, so in 2016, it’s important to make sure you’re covered when it comes to cybersecurity.

Look into data protection and other online security firms that offer services for your business. If you have an in-house IT department, make sure they’re on top of the latest developments in cybersecurity as well.

Native Advertising

Native advertising, advertorials, or sponsored content.

Whatever you call it, if you’re not doing it, your marketing strategy is suffering for it. If you’re a B2B company, try putting a sponsored blog post in a trade publication either online or in print. For businesses focused on consumer-facing marketing strategies, try a promoted tweet, Facebook post, or Instagram photo.

They may cost you a little bit of your advertising budget, but the exposure is worth it for your business.

Update Your Look

This may not be at the top of your to-do list, but if your team is sitting in cubicles that look like something out of Office Space, it may be time for an upgrade.

Take a look at some design trends for this year, and see if you can’t find something that not only looks better, but actually enhances the way your company does business. Maybe an open layout will be better for groups that do a lot of teamwork, or maybe higher cube walls will work more effectively for solo work like software development.

Staying on top of business trends will help you take your business to the next level in 2016. With these ideas, now you know what to look out for.
