Everyone wants courage in their lives. Does everyone have the ability to manifest courage?
Not only does everyone have the ability to be courageous, they have the responsibility to live their lives from a place of courage!
Developing courage in your daily life starts with the amount of confidence you have. When you are confident with who you are and what you are pursuing, it is much easier to have courage in the moments you need it most. Many times people seek out courage and never realize they already had courage in abundance. Imagine the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz. He had courage the entire time within himself and never realized how brave he truly was. We all have the capacity for courage within us and many times we just need assistance in bringing it to the surface. Here are some tips for developing more courage daily.
It is important to understand that to poses courage you have to know who you are and what you believe. You truly have to know yourself! Knowing who you are is a foundation for allowing you to have convictions and for being able to muster the courage you need.
This can be done through simple reflection and realizing what you want out of life. Once you have a established your ideal self you can begin looking at how to master becoming courageous and confident.
While the method for developing courage is simple, it must be reinforced often and with conviction. This is where most people fall short. Just like a diet, if we fail to continually work towards our goals, we will never reach them. Meaning that, if you half heartedly develop your courage, that you will never truly be courageous. Like anything in life, you must practice and implement these processes consistently in order for them to be effective.
Many people want to have more courage, though very few will actually follow through. Anyone can develop courage if they consistently and consciously make the effort.
Give yourself a reason to have courage! A great trick for this is something that has been called the Back Pocket theory. It provides individuals with something tangible that will allow them to figuratively (or literally) carry around courage in their back pocket that can be pull out when ever it is needed. You can implement this tool in your life by making 3 lists:
1. Make a list of 3 things you have accomplished in you life that you are proud of.
Be honest with yourself! Did you bring in a huge client for your company that no one else could? Were you able to negotiate a fantastic price on your home or car that saved you large amounts of money?
We have all accomplished things we are proud of, but we rarely reminisce on them. Why? Is it because it would make us vain or self absorbed? I’m not saying you need to post this list for the public, it is for you. Realize that you have already accomplished great things and therefore, more great things are ahead of you!
2. List 3 things you are thankful for. (EG: Health, family, my dog etc.)
Everyone is thankful for things in their life, but how often do we take the time to list them? By putting together a list of the good things in your life it can make it easier to see past minor inconveniences and set backs. Knowing that there are good things in your life will help you focus on the positive and avoid being discouraged.
Even when terrible things happen, having these things at your side will give you the strength and resolve to stand up straight and face your challenges. The things your are thankful for needs to be deeper than your new car or your great haircut. You need to think about the things that will be there for you, no matter what. Having this sort of support can make even your greatest challenges seem insignificant and surmountable.
3. List three goals you want to accomplish in the next 5 years (EG: buy a vacation home, Travel to Fiji, Start your own business, etc.)
Think BIG! What are some huge goals you want to achieve in the coming years? Write them down! Don’t be afraid to dream! Too often we get caught in a negative mentality where we only see the problems or challenges with the things we would like to accomplish. Give yourself permission to aspire to big things! Don’t worry about the how right now, just take the time to realize your goals and document them.
When you write down your goals, you make them more powerful. Having a physical list of the things you want to achieve makes them more tangible and mentally prepares you for the effort needed to reach them! Each of us has great things ahead of us if we plan to. The only thing separating the very successful from the mediocre is the ability to set and strive for goals. Don’t be afraid to think, dream, and aspire to humongous achievements! Believe that you can and then develop a plan to do it!
You have to have goals!
“If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time!” – Zig Ziglar
Why the lists?
By listing these things it rewires your brain into realizing your true potential and it will assist in helping you become courageous daily. When you know that you’ve accomplished great things and you have a list of things your are thankful for, it will make your lists of things you want to accomplish seem more attainable.
Remembering a list of things you have accomplished that make you spud allows you to realize that you possess the ability to achieve great things… in fact, you’ve already done it before! Then by listing things you are thankful for, it develops a ‘mental safety net’ that allows you to fall back on something if needed. When we know there is something there to catch us, we can be bolder in our actions and therefore more courageous. Lastly, listing large goal that we want to accomplish gives us something to aim at. When we have a target for our efforts, it make standing up to others and manifesting courage more easily. It allows you to look beyond smaller frustrations and rise above the day to day anxieties.
Keeping ‘something’ in your Back Pocket will give you a sense of confidence to approach your life with more meaning an more courage.
One final word, if you truly want to make courage a reality in your world, physically write down the ‘Back Pocket’ list. It makes your efforts more tangible and your goals more attainable. Manifesting courage is a noble thing and can be cultivated daily by those that put in the effort. While the principles for becoming courageous are simple, it is the action to follow through that hinders most. Everyone has the ability AND the responsibility to be more courageous. Put something in your Back Pocket and go get the World!
