“Go where you are celebrated—not tolerated. If they can’t see the real value of you, it’s time for a new start.” – Unknown
The definition of success is often relative, especially when it comes to careers.
Most times, when you choose a career, it is also important to define the kind of success you want to achieve from it. It goes beyond the lifestyle that is attained from it. You should also focus on the other parts, such as health and family.
Like business magnate, Richard Branson said: success is best attained when you are happy.
So you shouldn’t negate the power of happiness and satisfaction when choosing a career. But you should also consider other factors and understand their importance. For example: you won’t want to be doing or pursuing a job you love and then it leads to poor health because of burnout.
As a blogger, I have used the words of Neil Patel in building my career. To quote, “a blog can serve as the foundation for just about anything you want — a personal brand, an enterprise level business, a multi-million dollar content provider or a startup.” These words have helped me find my own definition of success in the path I’ve chosen.
Success, although relative, should be properly defined. No matter your career, what sort of accomplishment do you want from it? To help you out, here are several elements that make up success.
12 Factors That Make Up the True Definition of Success for Any Career
1) Having Time for Those Who Matter
“The home is the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose, and that is to support the ultimate career.” – C.S. Lewis
Yes, you are so busy and have so much to deal with. But it should still give you enough time to secure time with friends and family.
According to studies, the time you spend with family affords you quality experiences and appreciation for others. Having time for those who matter helps you get a sense of belongingness. To understand the true definition of success means cherishing our loved ones.
2) Being to Take a Vacation
As humans, we are wired to take breaks and recharge our energies. But sometimes, we also want to be busy and work harder – but productivity is not attained with working harder, but through working smarter. You can only achieve this when you appreciate and understand the importance of taking breaks.
Taking a vacation and visiting a new location could help you reassess your priorities and rediscover yourself. Your career should help you find relevance in taking breaks to improve your productivity. This doesn’t simply make you happier, but it also improves your overall wellness.
3) Retaining Your Values
“Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.” – Mike Rowe
The definition of success won’t be complete with values.
We all have beliefs and standards we expect from ourselves and from those around us. While making a career choice, it is important to consider what your values are. Know if such career will support your values or not.
4) Appreciating Wealth
“If I never got to make a living doing what I loved, I’d still do it–for fun and for free.” – Susan E. Isaacs
Yes we all emphasize passion and desire. But it is also important to be rewarded for any good work we accomplish. You can’t avoid the fact that there are bills to pay. Such rewards can help you attain the comfort in life you desire.
This shouldn’t mean that you need to be greedy. But it’s okay sit back and appreciate your wealth or any achievements your career helps you acquire.
5) Experiencing Growth
“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” – Albert Einstein
We all want to be progressive in life and in career. It is not ideal to be where you were yesterday. Your career should give you the leverage or the opportunity to experience growth. You should have the opportunity to learn and rise to more formidable challenges. When you feel progress, you know that you’re one step closer to finding the true definition of success.
6) Achieving Your Goals
“It is not as much about who you used to be, as it is about who you choose to be.” – Sanhita Baruah

8) Passion and Excitement

You can’t negate the power of passion. Your career should be able to stir you with excitement and the need to go to work each day. You should be thrilled about what you do and the value you add to your company or personal objectives!

10) Having a Positive Impact

Success is not in being a destructive member of the society, but rather in being contributive. By uplifting others with our actions and words, we are sure to be impactful. We should always seek a career where we can add value to others. Aim to have an extraordinary positive impact on the lives of others and the world.
