From family and friends to bosses and mentors, I’ve been fortunate to have amazing people in my life who’ve shared their words of wisdom with me. Below are a few of the quotes that have helped me deal with overcoming obstacles, influenced my leadership style and inspired me to live a meaningful life.
1.) “Love reflects love.”
This was a quote my grandparents used throughout my childhood, along with The Golden Rule: “Treat others how you would like to be treated.”
2.) “Count your blessings, name them one by one.”
This is another gem from my grandparents. No matter how bad circumstances may seem, you always have many things to be grateful for in your life every day.
3.) “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
I’ve used this quote from Maya Angelou to guide my leadership style and in conversations with evolving leaders as I mentor them.
4.) “Where there are problems, there are opportunities.”
One of my first bosses, whom I also consider a mentor, taught me to see opportunities in problems—instilling in me the importance of possibility thinking.
5.) “Study hard, invest in your education and never stop learning.”
This was something my father instilled in my brother and me at an early age. Having grown up during the Depression and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, my father saw many people lose everything–their homes and all of their possessions. He would often state that no one can take away your education, so be a lifelong learner in all aspects through formal education, life experiences and the wisdom of others.
6.) “There is always room at the table.”
No matter who, when or where—my father believed all people were welcome to join us at the table for meals and conversation. We’d embrace people who didn’t have food on their table, family and friends–especially during the holiday season.Through this example, my father taught us to open our hearts and share our blessings with others.
7.) “Our intention creates our reality.”
This quote by Wayne Dwyer is the definition of mind over matter. I have witnessed my own and others’ success, as well as failures based upon beliefs and perceptions.
8.) “Attract what you expect. Reflect what you desire. Become what you respect and mirror what you admire.”
I’m not sure who originally said this quote. But it resonates with me and my life philosophy. It’s all about the energy you put out in the universe!
9.) “When the Lord closes a door, someplace He opens a window”
Whenever I go through difficult times, I reflect on this quote from The Sound of Music (my favorite musical) to look for the open window and find the hidden opportunity.
10.) “Everyone needs a 3 a.m. friend.”
An influential mentor in my life shared this important wisdom with me during a difficult time in my life and it’s stuck with me ever since. Everyone needs a “3 a.m. friend” who will only be mad at you if you don’t call them when you needed them … even if it is as 3 o’clock in the morning. If you have a handful of 3 a.m. friends, you are a very blessed person. This is a quote I use all the time, especially with my daughters as they learn who their true friends are in their lives.
