My 10 favorite quotes that help me move forward in life
In certain people, there is a divine purpose that drives them to pursue their wildest dreams and turn them into their real life. Actually, I believe that all people have a divine purpose and some people choose to listen to that small still voice always driving forward with it or they listen to the louder voice that inevitably lives somewhere in their lives that says “do what will get you a steady pay check and forget those silly pipe dreams.” Either path you choose, I believe that the little voice is always trying to steer you into the dreams.
Even if you whole heartedly follow those dreams, it still is going to kick your butt. It’s never easy and you find yourself wanting to give up with every “no” that you hear. But you have to wonder with each thought of turning that bus around…would success be just past the one turn you didn’t take? Brain Tracy says “most people achieve their greatest success one step beyond their greatest failure.” I believe that. I believe that if you “follow your bliss, the universe will open doors where there were only walls.” -Joseph Campbell. I believe that whatever you believe deep down in your heart will lead you to your destiny. I also believe that if you stay incredibly clear to your path that success from A-B is quicker and less painful. If you vacillate between believing and wishing for your dream and trying to please everyone else, the path from A-B is very windy and filled with twists and turns of the Universe testing your faith in it.

I have also picked up from experience that once you make a decision, the Universe tests out your resolve by offering up great opportunities that are not in line with that particular decision you just made. Have you ever started dating someone and then all of a sudden an ex that was so hard to let go of shows back up in your life? It’s a test…don’t fall for it! It’s a trap! Keep moving forward!
1.) “The Universe Will Rearrange Itself To Accommodate Your Perception Of Reality.”- Tom Blue Wolf
There was a time in my life when at each full moon I participated in a Native American sweat lodge ceremony. It was an incredible time ~ exquisite and excruciating. It tested my resolve for not only my dreams and passions, but for my sheer willingness to be alive fully and embrace life. We would go to the mountains of Georgia and spend the day helping our peace elder prepare for the lodge. We would build the lodge and then all gather round to prepare to enter. He would say that “The universe will rearrange itself to accommodate our perception of reality.” (Tom Blue Wolf) and that whatever we truly believed about ourselves and our lives that the universe will conspire to line itself up based upon what we believe about ourselves. Our consciousness set the tone for our lives. If we believed that we were going to excel, the universe would line up based off that belief. If we believe that we are the kind of people that things always falls short with, the universe will confirm that too. Whatever we dare to dream, the universe will do for us. He would then encourage us to not only prepare physically, but prepare our resolve, our goals, our dreams and convictions.
2.) “Where There Is Breath, There Is Hope.” – Tom Blue Wolf, Native American Peace Elder
We would put our arms out wide and breathe in the deep smell of the sage that he would burn around us before we entered into the lodge. We would be cleansed by the magic of the sacred smoke. We would line up and pile in like little sardines ready to go through a process that would align with birth, death and rebirth. We would enter broken and unsure and leave there a warrior IF we managed to stay.
3.) “Most people achieve their greatest success one step beyond their
greatest failure.” – Brain Tracy
The passage from the beginning to the strong end would take you to your own breaking point. It tests your faith in both your strength and your willingness to face the deepest, darkest and weakest parts of yourself and see if you would continue moving forward to the end. He would say “where there is breath, there is hope.” and I find myself repeating that still whenever I feel weak and broken.
4.) “Life is like stepping onto a boat which is about to set sail out to sea
and sink” – Shunryu Suzuki Roshi
In the lodge we would go through four rounds of incredible heat, fire, smoke, gut wrenching sorrow and take a leap down the rabbit hole of our own subconscious (without any drugs). The stones that had been burning for hours upon hours are brought in one by one by the fire keeper. We sit around in a circle excited to start this amazing ceremony, only remembering how we felt when it was over the last time and forgetting so easily the intense struggle that is about to ensue. The rocks all come in and now we sit around a circle of piled stones so hot it makes a sauna feel like the arctic. The panic sets in when you realize that the door has closed and you have committed yourself to this ceremony, whether you like it or not.
5.) “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls.” – Joseph Campbell
The flap closes and it is the darkest blackness I have ever witnessed. There is no little flashes of color even from your own eyes from the change in light. It is like you entered into a void and there is no coming out of this thing unless you surrender yourself entirely. The elder pours water over the rocks and the sound of sizzling heat surrounds you and you feel like you have moved and are somehow now laying directly over the rocks. “How can you experience anything this hot and not die?” I do not say this lightly. I mean this. All of a sudden it is incredibly hard to take a breath and all you can think is “Oh My Lord I am going to die. I am going to pass out. I cannot take this. Get me out of here RIGHT NOW!” And inevitably, someone will start screaming and begging to be let out. That is the sound that sets off the other thought going through your mind “oh thank you to that someone else for freaking out and doing exactly what I wanted to do but didn’t say out loud! Thank you for expressing all of my fears! Now I might be able to survive this! Thank you for taking on all of our fears and taking one for this team!” The first time I ever went to the lodge, a man began screaming and crying into a complete and uncontrollable panic and tore his way out the front door of the lodge to escape. You could hear him crying so hard outside of the tent. He had totally given into the fear and now he regretted it. It was both heart breaking, and freeing. Heartbreaking for him, and freeing that it wasn’t you.
6.) “You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” – John Wooden
You experienced how it would feel if you gave up. You would cry and beat yourself up because you chickened out and turn tailed around on your own resolve. The sounds of him sobbing became my strength. I didn’t want to feel that way. I had to keep going. Breathing is so hard to do in those moments. A trick I’ve learned along the way is that when it is so hot it’s impossible to breathe, you touch the top and bottom teeth together and breath in through that space. Your teeth are the only things not burning and so it allows the breath to sneak its way in. I closed my teeth and took slow small breaths in. It’s the easiest way to stay alive in this situation. And so I did just that. I dropped the horrible thoughts that were going on within of how there is no way I’m going to get through this alive and began changing my inner dialogue to more of “You can do this. You’ve got this. Trust in your body, and trust in the process. You will make it to the warrior round.”
Round one represents your rebirth. You are now shiny and new and have a new chance at your life. What would you do different if you were to be born again? Round two is more of adolescents, facing what you may have gone through during those times and forgiving the past and strengthening your future. Round three is about your ancestors and honoring them. And finally round four-the warrior round. All stones from the fire have made their way inside the lodge. It is hotter than anyone should ever experience on purpose. We pull our wet towels up over our ears because our friends ears still had burns on them from the last time you were there. There is so little availability to pull in a breath that you must sing out loud and sit up higher and raise your chest and your voice to make it through. Thankfully, this round is the shortest round…or I might be inclined to say you might not make it through.
7.) “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday you will have been all of these.” – George Washing Carver
This actually all comes true in a sweat lodge ceremony. You go through every level there is from baby to warrior all in one sitting of several hours. You must tend to your own inner child to make it into the adult warrior round. You will crumble and you will want to give up and run out. You see what happens when you do and it gives you the resolve to stay in and move forward with a new sense of conviction.
This not only happens in that one day in a sacred ceremony. This happens throughout your entire life. You come out a kinder and more gentle person and not just to other people. As John Wooden says “you can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” In this case the recipient was you. In daily life, it is everyone. You come out of the lodge a warrior and somehow it reshapes your own version of yourself. I realized that I could do anything I set my mind and heart to-but that my mind and heart must speak the same language if I am going to go anywhere with it.
8.) “It’s never too late to become what you might have been.” – George Eliot
Fighting those very scary thoughts was immensely difficult to do. But, I did it and you can too. You can decide who you want to be, who you were meant to be and get rid of the time line that you restricted yourself to. You can be and do anything you have ever wanted to do. That does not mean that you will become famous or wildly successful in doing so. It means that your passions will move into your daily life and you will come alive.
9.) “Do not ask God to guide your footsteps if you are not willing to move your feet” – Unknown
Realize that your new life awaits you, warrior. You come out a new person and you have new goals and a deeper understanding that you are stronger and wiser than anyone ever gave you permission to be. And so you go…and what I hope you get out of this is the momentum to not only go with it…but to keep going when you feel the fears and doubts creep in. They are just distractions and ways to test your resolve. Stay true to your deepest desires and passions and make them part of your daily life. You deserve that, and so do I.
10.) “It always seems impossible until it’s done” – Nelson Mandela
Go warrior into the darkness and come back out into the light. I will meet you there.
